Laboratory Technician
ESSENTIAL FUNCTION:
Under general supervision, collect water and wastewater samples, perform physical, chemical, biological, and bacteriological analysis of water, wastewater and industrial waste samples using professional laboratory procedures, approved laboratory analysis methods and regulatory techniques; verify compliance with regulatory requirements and validate the accuracy of completed work.
DUTIES:
Sampling and Analysis
Collects samples of raw, partially treated, and treated wastewater, water, receiving waters, and by-products, and as directed performs specialized and complex chemical, bacteriological and physical tests and analyses to determine efficiency of treatment plant processes and ensure that plant effluent standards meet local, state and federal requirements.
Maintains chain of custody and other technical laboratory records.
Prepares standard chemical solutions and reagents.
Laboratory Assistance:
Maintains and cleans up laboratory work area; prepares, sorts, washes, decontaminates, sterilizes and stores laboratory and pretreatment glassware and equipment.
Performs laboratory sampling, analysis, recording and reporting in conformance with laboratory quality control and assurance procedures and practices.
Records data, maintains records.
Performs tests and analyses in the industrial wastewater monitoring, surveillance and control program.
Laboratory Procedures Support:
Complies with all Quality Assurance Manual and chemical hygiene procedures.
Updates and maintains laboratory files and records.
Researches, provides information and other support to laboratory staff and the Laboratory Manager on laboratory subjects.
Maintains data and records on laboratory activities.
Assists laboratory staff with identifying and implementing program training and safety needs.
Assists in the maintenance and cleaning of laboratory equipment and materials.
OTHER ASSIGNED DUTIES:
General Operations:
Participates in the general housekeeping and administrative record keeping operations of the laboratory.
Assumes responsibility for covering a part of the work assignments of other laboratory personnel during short absences.
Participates in teams engaged with process and customer service improvements, cross-training, and team performance evaluations.
Performs other assigned work which is consistent with the responsibilities assigned to the classification and necessary to the operations of the division and the Company.

Perform routine chemical, biological, physical, and bacteriological laboratory analyses.
Record and summarize data and information.
Operate laboratory analysis equipment and devices.
Operate automobiles, electric carts, and computers and general office equipment (i.e., copiers, facsimile machines).
Provide verbal and written information to a wide variety of people.
Establish and maintain open and honest communications with co-workers at all levels of the organization.
Exhibit a high customer service priority.
Read, write and clearly speak English effectively.
Perform mathematical, statistical, geometric and algebraic calculations common to scientific laboratory analysis.
EDUCATION:
Associates degree in Chemistry or a closely related field from an accredited college or university; Bachelors’ Degree in Chemistry or Biological Science preferred.
EXPERIENCE:
One (1) year of experience in wastewater, water or environmental testing laboratory performing basic chemical laboratory analysis work.
REQUIRED LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS AND REGISTRATIONS:
A valid California State Class C license must be maintained at all times.
A valid Grade I California Water Environment Association (CWEA) Laboratory Analysis Certification required within 18 months of appointment.

The hiring range for this position is $28 to $33 per hour. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity, and may also vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience amongst other factors.
